Playtesting

  • Controls confusing
  • Not obvious you have to move on beat/not sure where beat is
  • Multitasking aspect is hard
  • Projectiles not menacing and look like collectibles
  • Movement not intuitive/limiting only moving left and right
  • Scoring system not super rewarding
  • Rhythm sequence is not clear and confusing being able to hit multiple enemies at once
  • Player is hard to see along background
  • Tunnel moving in one direction can get boring

New Decisions

  • Limit movement to only bottom half of pipe so controls are limited to left and right (easy to understand, but easy to get to all lanes)
  • Will test changing gameplay to have two phases: dodging and attacking
    • Enemies will telegraph projectiles to dodge in sequence
    • Enemies will telegraph arrows to hit in a specific sequence
    • Hopefully addresses confusing multitasking and gives a clear direction on what rhythms and order to hit in
  • Update art
    • Make player contrast more
    • Make projectiles more dangerous looking
    • Add cutscenes to help create sense of progression
  • Update tutorial
    • slow things down, introduce concepts one at a time with chances to practice each concept
    • Show clear mapping between arrows and what buttons to hit on the controller
  • Update HUD arrangement to make it make sense
